It’s funny seeing the reactions of people when they ask what I do for a living. When I tell them that I’m a hypnotherapist they slowly avert their eyes, fearing that with just one look or snap of my fingers, I can make them quack like a duck or do some other silly act. The next thing they ask is, “Does it work for Weight Loss”? When I say yes, I hear a range of responses from fear to eagerness.

I tell folks that when I add a hypnotic trance to their weight loss activities, it will help them lose more weight and keep it off longer. Even with my attempts to educate, people are still apprehensive. Believe me, I get it! Historically, the health care industry has put a whammy on many communities around the world. Folks are afraid and skeptical at best, and fear a lack of control, at worse. We’ll talk about this so-called “lack of control” in just a bit.

 

People just don’t get the connection between hypnosis and weight loss. In the mid-nineties there was a persuasive reanalysis of 18 hypnotic studies which showed that psychotherapy clients who learned self-hypnosis lost twice as much weight as those who didn't. One study even showed, clients kept it off two years after treatment ended. Hypnotherapy has remained a well-kept secret of the weight loss industry.

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind that we all easily enter several times a day without realizing it. Think about daydreaming or that feeling right before nodding off to sleep or that state you were in when you missed your exit on a familiar highway. These are all types of natural altered states we easily enter without trying.

1.  You gotta want it

The best way to be successful in your quest to lose weight through hypnosis is to have a desire to take action. No one can do it for you. No one can make you do it. It has to be your choice. Your desire to make a change has to be your primary reason to seek hypnotherapy for weight loss. Chances are that if you do this for someone else, it may not be effective. On the flip side, if you do this for you and you really want to lose weight and are ready for this life transformation, then you have taken the most important step in your weight loss journey. Does it mean you have to have all of the answers? No. Do you need to have the motivation to eat healthy and exercise  now? No!  (That’s where hypnosis comes in). All you need is the desire to lose weight and then show up to the sessions. You will gain the motivation to exercise and eat healthy during the session.

 

2.  You already have the answers within

It’s no secret that we all have the power within ourselves to do all things. However, for some of us it has not been easy to tap into this inner power. That does not mean it’s not there. You were born with the ability to make changes and to reach your goals. A hypnotic trance will help you get there quicker without the conscious barriers that often get in the way.

 

3.  Expect the best

It’s ok if you haven’t always expected the best outcomes for your life or your weight loss goals. Imagine yourself in the clothing you want to wear, imagine being the size you desire to be, imagine shopping in the store of your dreams that doesn’t carry your current size, imagine seeing yourself happily eating healthy foods and beverages … you get the point. 5.  Wash, Rinse and Repeat

As with anything we learn, it takes repetitive action to get it right. Remember when your teacher said, “Practice makes perfect”. Well there is credence in this age old mantra. The more we practice anything, the better we get at that thing. You will learn how to use self-hypnosis on a daily basis at home for the best outcomes.

 

6.  Get back on the wagon

If you’ve fallen off the weight loss wagon and find yourself eating that chocolate cake or if you have snacked on those cookies at night, no worries. It’s expected that you may fall off the wagon, but instead of feeling terrible, ashamed or embarrassed, a trained hypnotherapist will help you to respond to it as an opportunity for growth. You will be encouraged and not discouraged on this journey. Shaming people is not an effective way to change behaviors. Effective hypnotherapists support their clients while holding a positive vision for the client’s success. This builds trust between client and therapist which results in long lasting successful results for the client.

 

7.  You have control

Now back to the notion that people think that they will have a lack of control during hypnosis. This cannot be farther from the truth. YOU are always in control. For instance, if you want to stop in the middle of hypnosis, you can. If what is being said doesn’t quite resonate with you, the trained hypnotherapist can reframe words, metaphors and imagery that feel comfortable to you.

 

When

When should you take action? The time is now. You know the saying, “There’s no time like the present!” You don’t have to wait until the New Year to get started.  You deserve to get the life you want and you deserve to reach your health goals. You deserve the body you have dreamed of.
